The Bear Society was created by the Kiowa Nation more than 100 years ago to show respect for the lordly spirit, bravery and fighting strength of the bear. Membership in the Society was a badge of prestige.  They were warriors to be feared and respected.

This axe indicates membership in the Bear Society by its owner.  It has the bear claw insignia cut out of its hand forged head and also formed by brass spots on the drop.

This is a very fine reproduction made by Prairie Edge in Rapid City, SD.  Circa 1990's
