In Native American cultures, the Frog represents abundance, fertility, cleansing, and are associated with water and rain. Frog asks the spirits to bring rain for its people. Also seen as a fertility fetish, Frog is often kept near women's bed when they are trying to get pregnant. Since water is associated with Frog, it also aids in cleansing of the mind, body, and spirit.
Fetishes, or “charm stones,” are created with the intention of being carried around, as they are believed to house mystical powers from the spirit of the animal it embodies. These “powers” can vary depending on the kind of symbol or animal carved, but often represent luck, protection, power, healing, or abundance. It is also believed that the kind of care the fetish receives is proportionate to the care it in turn provides.
American Indians have used fetishes throughout recorded history, especially the Indians of the Southwest. The Zuni people of New Mexico are particularly well-known fetish carvers.
