Sinew sewn with Venetian glass beads (GM179)

Authentic Northern Plains - possibly Cheyenne or Lakota - Native American beaded moccasins, antique ca. 1890s. Some design elements and the construction are suggestive of Cheyenne - the row of beads over the vamp, running at the base of the tongue and also over the seam at the back of the heel - but the main design over the vamp, which is meant to represent a buffalo hoof track, is classically Lakota, as well as the Paha Stitch (lazy stitch) beading technique. The maker could have been of dual heritage, since the Cheyenne and Lakota had become closely aligned at that point in time. After about the 1820s/1830s or so, the Lakota and Cheyenne became very close allies, to the point that they were even becoming part of each other's warrior societies. Their joint defeat of Custer attests to the strength of their alliance. The fact that two strong warrior societies would form such an alliance was unusual, especially since their languages were very different.

These moccasins are sinew sewn with small, uneven Venetian glass beads. The red beads are "white hearts" - white beads with a coating of transparent red glass. If you look closely, you can see the white centers. The white centers indicate these Venetian glass beads were made in the late 1800s. This was a less expensive way of making colored beads, and you may come across them in blue and green in addition to the red seen here. You would not see a "solid" red bead in a pre-1900 piece. Venetian beads are also slightly irregular in shape and size. After 1900, you may still see whitehearts, but you will see more "solid" red beads start to be used. These moccasins have an additional rigid leather sole sewn on. They are not in perfect condition, but still very beautiful with a classic design.

DETAILS
Artist: unknown, Cheyenne or Lakota
Size: Approximately 11” long
Condition: antique, from a private collection - very good condition for age - considerable wear, leather is stiff and there are areas of missing beadwork.

GM179

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0242/5605/3353/files/IMG_7767_4dc9f601-41f4-4453-a8f7-954033bdf0d7.jpg?v=1686343587
north-plains-authentic-native-american-beaded-infant-moccasins-vintage-thread-sewn-with-venetian-glass-beads-3-144
North Plains Authentic Native American beaded infant moccasins, vintage.
