Fully Beaded Native American Horse Mask with Custom Display Stand, ca. 1980s (GM685)
Gorgeous! This fully-beaded, Native American-made, two-sided horse mask was purchased directly from the artist by the original collector at the Red Earth Festival in the 1980s.
It's hard to know where to begin with this fabulous piece! The beading is done on canvas in a Paha stitch or "lazy stich" design. The canvas is edged in leather and the pieces are joined with leather ties. The mask is decorated with metal bells at the "nose" and has rope fringe along the sides. At the top of the head is a cluster of horsehair tassels and feathers tied with sinew. On each side of the neck of the mask is a pocupine quilled medicine wheel with a medicine bundle tied to the center. The custom-built oak stand has a padded mesh "head" at the top and disassembles into three pieces. The stand is included in the price, however, the shipping cost for the mask and stand must be calculated and paid before the item is shipped.
